Just look for wet areas. the back of the engine near the turbo has the water cooled EGR, so that is also an area for potential leaks.
The new compressors have a control valve operated by the ECU. It removes the pressure from the system if more power is required from the engine. These valves are notorious for sticking open and then your compressor cannot build-up pressure to make the AC work. The simple way is to replace the valve. Price range from $25 to $80 for the valve.

As you don’t notice any drop on performance, starting or tickover I’d assume the valve is stuck shut..you’d be amazed at how much carbon crap can accumulate in the egr. You are, unknowingly, probably causing more pollution than before and your fuel consumption will be worse, and the engine management lamp makes you aware of this.
Saab EGR Valve ( 55215031 ), which will fit: Saab 9-3 1.9 16v only – 2004 – Onwards – and Saab 9-5 – 2006 – 2009 – 1.9 16v Diesel models only. And for Saab 1.9 TTiD part no. is 55209609, 93166910, which is suitable for Saab 9-3 Sport 2008-2012 – All Diesel 1.9 TTiD DTR.
I should mention that although it may be the egr valve that needs cleaning. (quite likely) it may also be faulty swirl valves amongst other things. Given that my zafira 1.9 cdti only started getting problems with leaking swirl valves around the 90, 000 miles mark i think your egr valve would the best place to start.
It turned out to be due to damaged engine wiring loom somewhere around starter motor. As I found out this is very common problem for mk5 platform cars. Problem was solved by changing whole engine wiring loom (part number for BKC touran is 03G972619AE). Last edited: Dec 3, 2015.

Dec 26, 2012. #1. Hi Guys, Does anyone know if it is possible to repair or rebuild the N18 EGR solenoid valve? I am sure that mine has a problem and it seems to me that it would be better to fix it if possible instead of pay $100 to replace it, especially when the only observable effect on the car is the check engine light.
Got a new EGR valve today and went about dismantling the old unit. I got as far as removing the Engine Manifold Valve that is attached to the EGR Valve, and I'm led to believe that there are just two more bolts holding the unit in place, however I can't seem to remove the final couple of bolts.
